The Integra Brief — September 2026

September is a special month for Integra as we mark 32 years of building with our people, customers, and partners. This Foundation Day Special brings together highlights from Connexions 2026, our engagement with Peer Review Week, our upcoming presence at Frankfurt Book Fair, and our role as Knowledge Partner for the API Excellence Awards. We also bring together recent perspectives from Integra on AI, editorial judgment, peer review, scientific rigor, and the future of education content.

Integra celebrated 32 years of growth, innovation, and shared success at Connexions 2026, held on 20 September at Sangamitra Convention Centre. Guided by the theme “One Team, One Vision, One AI-Powered Future,” the celebration brought employees and leadership together to reflect on Integra’s journey and look ahead to the future.

The occasion was honoured by the presence of Chief Guest Dr. M. Sathya Kumar, Advocate – Supreme Court, High Courts & Tribunals. Integra’s leadership reflected on the company’s 32-year journey and shared perspectives on how people, AI, innovation, and collaboration will shape the next chapter.

Connexions 2026 also provided an opportunity to recognize employees and teams for their achievements and contributions, alongside moments of celebration, cultural performances, and activities that brought colleagues together. More than an anniversary celebration, Connexions 2026 was a reflection of the collective effort behind Integra’s journey, and the shared ambition that will continue to move us forward.

As an organizational member of Peer Review Week, Integra joined the global scholarly publishing community for Peer Review Week 2026, with Integra team members serving on the event’s Steering Committee. Across all five days, Integra showcased the expertise of its peer review specialists and shared perspectives on the evolving needs of publishers and editorial teams.

To mark the week, Integra also released the Peer Review Capacity Playbook, a practical resource designed to help publishers and editorial teams assess and strengthen peer review capacity. The 2026 theme, “Peer Review Capacity: Volume, Speed, and Quality,” places growing submission volumes, faster decision expectations, and limited reviewer availability at the center of the conversation.

As AI moves into more stages of journal workflow, the question is not simply whether a task can be automated, but where human judgment remains central. Integra’s practical map distinguishes mechanical work that can often be automated from decisions that require interpretation, context, and accountability. It also emphasizes sequence: AI output should inform editorial work, not become the verdict.

As AI makes scientific writing faster and easier, the distinctive human contribution may increasingly lie elsewhere. Ashutosh argues that observation, reading, reviewing, interpretation, and the ability to recognize what matters remain central to scientific rigor because they require judgment and insight. AI can help organize and communicate discoveries, but researchers remain responsible for interpretation, validation, and the final scholarly contribution.

A Scholarly Kitchen discussion featuring Ashutosh Ghildiyal and the full team of Chefs

For Peer Review Week 2026, The Scholarly Kitchen asked its Chefs to look beyond the familiar call for more reviewers and examine deeper questions around peer review capacity. The discussion covers reviewer judgment, workload, incentives, AI, and whether scholarly publishing needs to rethink how it defines and uses reviewer capacity.

Ashutosh Ghildiyal, Mathïs Fédérico, and Maria Machado explore whether scholarly evaluation should better reflect the purpose of the work being assessed. The article distinguishes exploration from validation and considers how evaluation models can direct scarce reviewer expertise toward the questions that matter, while maintaining explicit standards of rigor.

Our latest comic strip explores what publishers should do with the capacity created by AI. AI can help with reviewer discovery, expertise matching, workflow coordination, reminders, and other mechanical tasks. The opportunity is not simply to process more reviews, but to create more capacity for thoughtful evaluation and editorial judgment.

As education workflows move from retrieval and response toward agentic systems that can plan, use tools, check outputs, and hand work from one step to another, the requirements for content are changing. Integra’s latest article examines the move from digital and AI-ready content toward agent-ready content, including the growing importance of explicit structure, machine-readable metadata, provenance, validation, dependencies, permitted use, and clear human review points.
